1. What steps should I take if I have discovered I am a victim of identity theft?

Take immediate action by following the steps outlined in our ID Theft First Aid Video and Identity Theft Recovery page.

2. How can I best protect myself from becoming a victim of identity theft?

If you do not regularly apply for new credit lines we recommend implementing a "credit freeze" and show you how in our security credit freeze video. Additionally, we recommend following all the steps under the left side categories titled Identity Theft Prevention. Including:

    Obtaining (for free) and reviewing your credit reports
    Opting out of junk mail and unsolicited telemarketing phone calls
    Protecting your postal mail from identity theft
    Shredding your personally identifiable information with a cross cut shredder
    Avoid carrying unnecessary personally identifiable information in your wallet or purse
    Safekeeping of personally identifiable information within you home and office
    Be sure to follow safe practices online
